World Championships 2009
I'm officially over the jet lag after arriving to Spain one week ago. We've had a great week of training sharing water slots with a few American and Aussie paddlers. The training is starting to slow down now heading into the race with only one session per day.
I really like it here in La Seu D'Urgell. The course is super fun to paddle on. This is the site used for the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona. Seu is a cute little town and generally very mellow. This past weekend though has been one to remember.
They've been celebrating every night until about 6 am. The party doesn't really get started apparently until around 1 am. We've been staying out of town so luckily our sleep hasn't been disturbed but last night we went into town to witness the Fire Festival. It's one of the most spectacular events I've ever seen. They lace the town with fireworks. It all starts off with people dressed up as devils putting on some sort of a skit then it takes off with a massive fireworks display which so happened to be about 3 metres away. It was terrifying and very exciting all at the same time. They then proceed to parade through the town shooting fireworks everywhere. The city had sneaky fireworks strung above the street so when the street filled with people they set them off. Once I got caught in the middle of the street with nowhere to go. I managed to escape with no holes burnt in my shirt but others were not so lucky. I'll post pictures soon. It was quite an amazing event to witness.
I'll be racing in the qualifying event on September 10. Keep an eye on the race website for live results and video.
